Dr. Leanne Lefler was among 10 nurse leaders across the country who were named this year’s Campaign for Action Culture of Health: Breakthrough Leaders in Nursing. Created to both honor and encourage nurses who are innovators in improving the nation’s health, the award includes leadership training at the Center for Creative Leadership that is paid for by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The nurse leaders will act as ambassadors for the Campaign and work with their states’ Action Coalitions to help build healthier communities. Collectively and individually, this year’s group is impressive: They share creativity, energy, and a devotion to helping their communities achieve greater health, and each individually has offered an innovation specific to the populations she serves. Among the ideas they have put into action: efforts to reduce child abuse, improve access to healthy food and living opportunities, and improve mental health outcomes in adolescents through a pioneering use of avatars.
