Doctor of Nursing Practice Level Preparation for Nurse Practitioner Role

The College of Nursing offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice with nurse practitioner preparation. The initial nurse practitioner specialty program (post-BSN-to-DNP) may be completed in three or four years to prepare students in one of the following nurse practitioner specialties:

  • Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
  • Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
  • Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

Applicants who are already certified as advanced practice registered nurses (certified nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwifes, certified clinical nurse specialists or certified registered nurse anesthetists) may apply to the post-BSN-to-DNP track to meet requirements for one of the nurse practitioner specialties listed above.

Upon successful completion of required coursework, students are eligible to sit for national certification in his or her chosen specialty.

UAMS was an early adopter of technology in nursing education. Faculty are experts in delivering high-quality programs through online and telecommunications. The post-BSN-to-DNP program uses a hybrid format and distance modalities to enable students to remain close to their homes. Classes offered on-campus are telecommunicated across the state and Blackboard is used for online courses. Laboratory experiences are offered on-campus and at the UAMS Regional Campuses. Experiential learning occurs at clinical sites throughout the state.

Students are able to complete the post-BSN-to-DNP program in 3 or 4 years and sit for a national certification exam in his or her chosen advanced practice registered nurse specialty. The post-BSN-to-DNP program has a fall-only admission with an application deadline of February 1.
