Dr. Nicholas P. Lang (right) and his wife Helen (left) visited the College of Nursing recently. They received an update on the Nicholas P. Lang, MD, and Helen F. Lang, RN, Professorship that they established earlier this year. The inaugural holder of the Professorship, Dr. Claudia Barone, expressed appreciation to the Langs. Their Professorship is enabling her to conduct additional research in smoking cessation. In addition to the Professorship, Dr. and Mrs. Lang are members of the Dean’s Circle and they established the Helen F. Lang Endowed RN Scholarship. They were both honored in 2013 as Honorary Alumni of our College. Dr. Lang retired from UAMS in December, 2014 as our Medical Center Chief Medical Officer. Helen retired at the same time as a longtime nurse in the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. Dr. Claudia Barone is a nationally known expert in tobacco cessation and a leader in academic nursing. She served as our college dean for five years. Today she practices as an Advanced Practice Partner in the UAMS Center for Nursing Excellence, is a professor in the UAMS College of Nursing and serves as the principal investigator on an interdisciplinary tobacco counseling grant.
