Ph.D. in Nursing

The only Nursing program in Arkansas offering a research doctorate.

Overview

As the only program in Arkansas offering a research doctorate in Nursing, the program meets market demands by producing graduates qualified to teach, conduct research, and serve as leaders in nursing and health care. The graduates are placed quickly into Arkansas universities and health care settings, as well as other locations around the United States. Students may enter the program with a BSN, an MNSc, or a DNP, with different admission and curriculum requirements for each of these three tracks.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing program was implemented in 1997, with the first class graduating in May 2000. Graduates of the doctoral program are prepared to advance the art and science of nursing through research and scholarship. They are expected to assume leadership positions in academic and health care settings, conduct research, and to influence nursing practice, health care delivery, and nursing social awareness.

Our program is known for its small classes and individualized attention. Students from across the state enroll in the program. Courses are offered in a blended format using face-to-face and Blackboard delivery. Both the MNSc–Ph.D. and BSN–Ph.D. programs consist of required coursework, electives, doctoral comprehensive examinations, and a dissertation.

Nursing Ph.D. Program Costs

The UAMS Nursing PhD program costs approximately $5,000 per semester for full-time Arkansas residents and about $9,000 per semester for non-residents. However, several options are available to help significantly reduce these expenses:

  • UAMS employees receive 90% tuition reimbursement each semester.
  • Faculty research assistantships are available and can cover most, if not all, tuition costs.
  • Each year, we offer Graduate Assistant positions and student stipends to two qualified students.
  • Non-resident applicants are eligible for in-state tuition rates.
  • Other Scholarships are available through the College of Nursing in the Fall semester
  • Housing and residency are available for International students
