Dr. Jean C. McSweeney Featured in Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Jean C. McSweeney, PhD, RN, the College of Nursing’s associate dean for research, was featured in Sunday’s High Profile section of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette for her tremendous work as a nurse, professor, scientist and research mentor.

“Her work has really been an impetus for change,” Patricia A. Cowan, PhD, RN, dean of the College of Nursing, was quoted in the story.

McSweeney is internationally known for her more than 20 years of research on heart disease in women.

In 2003, she published the first study that showed often have different symptoms than men for heart attacks. The study garnered national media attention.

In 2016, McSweeney chaired the first scientific statement from the American Heart Association entirely devoted to ischemic heart disease in women. The statement said more research, superior diagnostic equipment and exceptional recognition of symptoms was needed to better identify and treat women with ISD.

McSweeney has been at UAMS for more than 20 years and served as the college’s interim dean for most of 2015, prior to Dean Cowan’s appointment in November of that year.

“I have always been a nurse,” McSweeney was quoted in the story. “It’s the most rewarding profession I think anybody could go into.”
