Dean Cowan, Teresa Whited Named AACN Program Fellows

Sept. 7, 2017

Patricia Cowan, PhD, RN, dean of the UAMS College of Nursing, and Teresa Whited, DNP, APRN, clinical assistant professor and director of Master of Nursing Science programs in the College of Nursing, were named as fellows to respective programs in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).

Cowan was among 30 nursing leaders across the country to be named a Wharton Fellow. The fellows participated in a four-day program at the University of Pennsylvania, home to the Wharton School, where they learned leadership enhancement techniques, strategic relationship-building skills, and negotiation and entrepreneurship skills. The Fellows also had the opportunity to network with peers and explore future opportunities to collaborate.

The Wharton Executive Leadership Program has been offered since 2012 and is meant for deans, directors, associate deans and associate directors of nursing schools or progr

ams. This year’s class represents 20 states, including 12 academic health centers.

Cowan is the only current Fellow from an Arkansas institution. Her fellowship lasts one year.

Whited was named a Fellow of the AACN’s Leadership for Academic Nursing Program, which is designed to prepare future deans and administrators. The Fellows attended a four-day workshop in July in Chaska, Minnesota, where they participated in courses geared toward academic leadership.

Throughout the coming year, the Fellows will take part in professional development activities and a mentorship program as they work to accomplish individualized leadership development goals identified at the workshop.

Whited was one of 40 Fellows and is the only current Fellow representing an Arkansas institution.
