Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

College of Nursing : Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse educated at the Master’s or Doctoral level with expertise in the care of mental illness across the life span. The PMHNP provides mental health care to pediatric, adult, and older adult populations and families that incorporates the assessment, diagnosis, and medication management of mental illness.

Role of PMHNP

The PMHNP also provides mental health promotion and interventions, including family and group therapy, brief psychotherapy, play therapy, social skills training, and psychoeducation. The PMHNP delivers these services in a variety of settings, including community mental health facilities, psychiatric impatient units, hospital emergency rooms, long-term care facilities and mental health clinics, shelters for vulnerable populations, private psychiatric practices, and prisons.

Completion of the PMHNP program qualifies the graduate to take the national examination for certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Upon certification, the PMHNP may apply for an Advanced Practice License and then Prescriptive Authority through any State Board of Nursing.
