BSN Scholarships ~ MNSc Scholarships ~ PhD Scholarships

2009-2010 scholarship application deadline has passed. Here is a list of the 2009-2010 named/endowed scholarship recipients.   Click here to be notified when the Scholarship applications for the 2010-2011 academic year will be available. Students who make application for admission to the Bachelor of Science Nursing program, the Master of Nursing Science program or the PhD in Nursing program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Nursing are encouraged to investigate possible sources of loans and scholarships. Endowed scholarships for the UAMS College of Nursing have been made possible through the generosity of donors and alumni of this College.  Click here for a list of available scholarships.

ELIGIBILITY AND GUIDELINES:

  1. Funding is available for degree seeking undergraduate and graduate students.

  2. Scholarships are awarded primarily on the basis of scholastic ability, leadership qualities, and financial need.

  3. A student's funding is subject to the maintenance of satisfactory academic work and the completion of all of the requirements listed on the application form and scholarship agreement.

  4. Students can apply for College of Nursing Scholarships once they have made application to any College of Nursing degree seeking program (post masters certification students and non degree seeking students are not eligible).  However, the Awards & Scholarship Committee will only award scholarship to students who have been admitted when they meet to make award decisions in April/May 2010.

  5. Applications received past the due date and incomplete applications will not be considered.

  6. Most scholarships are awarded for fall and spring only (except for the full paid scholarships, Beaumont and Skelly scholarships).

Arkansas Hospital Auxiliary Association Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a second year baccalaureate student with financial need. Award: $2,000/yr.

Barbara Pearson Nursing Scholarship
is awarded to a student in the BSN program. It is a memorial to a long-time faculty member and friend of the College, Barbara Pearson. Award: $1,000/yr.

Blue Jeans for Books Award is a book stipend awarded to a rising senior BSN student who also has an interest in becoming a nurse educator someday. The idea for the Blue Jeans for Books Award came from a College of Nursing faculty member. They funds are raised by CON faculty and staff. In exchange for a $2.00 per person contribution CON employees are allowed by the Dean to wear blue jeans on Fridays. Award: $200.00.

BSN Beaumont Foundation of America Scholarship is utilized for: 1) scholarships for first generation college students, 2) support aimed at minority applicants, and 3) financial incentives for those who make a commitment to stay as faculty in nursing education upon graduation. When possible, students from rural areas of Arkansas and eastern Texas will be given priority consideration for this funding. Award: $2,000 per year ($1,000 summer, $1,000 fall).

BSN Gertrude E. Skelly Charitable Foundation Scholarship is designated for: 1) first generation college students, 2) support for minority applicants, and 3) scholarship incentives for those who make a commitment to remain as nursing education faculty upon graduation.  Award: $1,500 per year ($500 summer, $500 fall, $500 spring).

Cammy Giffin Haynes Nursing Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate Nursing student who has academic promise and financial need. Preference will be given to graduates of Joe T. Robinson High School or RN graduates from East AR Community College. Award: $1,000/yr.

Carolyn B. Purtle Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a baccalaureate student in Hope who demonstrates financial need and a commitment to excellence in nursing practice. Award: $1,000/yr.

Class of 1997 Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a baccalaureate student. The members of the College of Nursing class of 1997 completed the endowment to fund a nursing scholarship. Award: $1,000/yr.

College of Nursing Scholarships for 2009-2010 were made possible by the generosity of an anonymous donor. 71 BSN students were awarded scholarships ranging in amounts of $500 - $2,000.

David L. Johnston Scholarship is awarded to a LPN who is completing requirements for the baccalaureate degree in nursing. Preference is given to a LPN employed at the VA Hospital. David L. Johnston, Jr. was a veteran who was injured in a car accident after his discharge from service. David was in a coma for 16 years in the Little Rock VA. Following his death, his family established an endowment in his name to commemorate the excellence in nursing care given during those years by nurses at the VA. Award: $1,500/yr.

Dr. and Mrs. W.B.H. Pool - BSN Scholarship is awarded to a baccalaureate nursing student attending at the Hope campus from Hempstead or Nevada counties. A GPA of 2.5 or above is required. The student must plan to work in Arkansas or Texarkana. Award: $1,000/yr.

Dr. Elizabeth O’Connell Scholarship has been created through the generosity of friends, family, and former students that Dr. O’Connell taught during her tenure. These graduates believe that Dr. O’Connell, a professor of Maternal and Child Health during the College’s early years, is truly a remarkable individual and most deserving of a scholarship in her name. This scholarship will support a BSN student who demonstrates financial need and leadership.  Award: $1,000/yr.

Dr. Janet Lord Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a BSN student demonstrating financial need and academic ability. Dr. Lord was on the UAMS College of Nursing faculty from 1982 to 2003, serving as an associate dean for her last three years. She spent countless hours tutoring students in various programs and was a professional role model for her many students.

Dr. Lee and Maria Nauss Nursing Scholarship will support a BSN student having financial need and academic promise. Award: $1,000/yr.

Florence C. Zook R.N. Nursing Scholarship shall be to honor the memory of Florence C. Zook’s passion and commitment to the field of nursing and to the care she received at the Winthrop R. Rockefeller Cancer Institute and the UAMS-CARTI. The BSN recipient shall have a grade point above the average for the current nursing class. Academic accomplishments and financial need will be strongly considered with financial need being determining factor if all else is equal. The recipient must demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in oncology. Award: $1,000/yr.

Florence Grabiel Ellis, RN Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate BSN student who is in financial need. The scholarship was endowed by Mary Ellis in memory of her mother Florence. Award: $1,000/yr.

Gloria Rauch Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a baccalaureate student who demonstrates financial need and has achieved academic excellence. Award: $1,000/yr.

Helen F. Lang R.N. Scholarship Fund was established by Dr. Nicholas Lang in honor of his wife Helen, for a lifetime devoted to the care of her patients and to the education of surgical house staff.  This scholarship will will support a senior BSN student with a nursing G.P.A. of 3.5 or higher who is interested in surgical nursing with the commitment to pursue working in the operating room and/or caring for patients recovering from surgical procedures upon graduation.

Jean McClendon Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a RN returning for a degree in nursing and demonstrating financial need.

Kathryn Crandall Scholarship
is awarded to a baccalaureate nursing student with financial need and academic promise.

Little Rock Departmental Club will support a deserving baccalaureate student. 

Madelyne M. and Edward C. McCarty Nursing Scholarship is given to a second-year nursing student who has a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher and who went to high school in Union or Marion county.
Award: $1,000/yr.

Marie Stephens Scholarship will support a BSN student who has academic ability and
financial need. This scholarship was established by Dr. Norma Long, a 1958 UAMS College of Nursing BSN graduate, in memory of her mother, Marie Stephens. Award: $1,000/yr.

Marion Pool Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a baccalaureate student demonstrating financial need and who plans to practice in Arkansas.   Award: $1,000/yr.

Mary Katherine Mourot Nursing Scholarship
is awarded to a senior nursing student having one of the top three cumulative GPAs.  This scholarship is in memory of Ms. Weise’s deceased sister, Mary Katherine Mourot, who was a registered nurse and whose professional legacy shall be herewith perpetually remembered. Award: $1,000/yr.

Martha Harding Gann Memorial Scholarship was made possible through the generosity of the Arkansas Medical Society Alliance (AMSA) and will go to a baccalaureate student with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above who has excellent clinical abilities and has demonstrated integrity, character, compassion and who also has financial need. Award: $1,500/yr.

Mike W. Spades Memorial Scholarship is
awarded to a BSN nursing student.  The son and daughters of Michael W. Spades, Sr., have endowed scholarship in memory of their father. Preference will be given to students from Van Buren County, Arkansas. Award: $1,000/yr.

Mr. and Mrs. John G. Ragsdale Scholarship for Nursing is awarded to a baccalaureate nursing student. Award: $1,000/yr.

Mr. and Mrs. Jon Huntsman Scholarship is awarded to a baccalaureate nursing student with financial need. Award: $1,000.00/yr.

National Active and Retired Federal Employee Association Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student demonstrating financial need along with academic achievement in practicing gerontology. Award: $1,500/yr.

Neil and Clara Spain Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a BSN nursing student or graduate student demonstrating financial need.

Paul O. Canaday Family Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a baccalaureate-nursing student who demonstrates scholastic achievement and shows financial need. Preference is given to a RN student from the UALR Associate Degree Nursing Program. Award: $1,000/yr.

Ray Woods Nursing Scholarship was established in loving memory of her husband, by Rita M. Woods. This scholarship will support a BSN student with financial need. Award: $1,000/yr.

Rita M. Woods Nursing Scholarship was established by a long time employee of UAMS and friend of the College of Nursing to support a BSN student with financial need. Award: $1,000/yr.

Veronica McNeirney Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a baccalaureate student with leadership potential and financial need. Award: $1,000/yr.


Scholarships for Master’s Students*
*All scholarships listed may not be awarded annually.

Becky Moore Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a master’s nursing student demonstrating financial need. Award: $1,000/yr.

Cornelia Sundermann Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a master’s nursing student demonstrating financial need and academic excellence. Award: $1,000/yr.

Daphine Doster Nursing Scholarship is awarded to master’s nursing student needing financial assistance. The student must be an Arkansas resident. Award: $1,000/yr.

Deborah Dorsa Carman Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a master’s nursing student demonstrating financial need. Preference is given to a student in pediatric or neonatal nursing from Northwest Arkansas. Award: $1,000/yr.

Dr. & Mrs. William Pool Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a full-time master’s nursing student demonstrating leadership abilities who intends to practice in Arkansas. Preference is given to residents of Hempstead and Nevada counties. Award: $1,000/yr.

Dr. Ann King Cashion Scholarship is awarded to a master’s nursing student substantiating financial need. Award: $1,000/yr.

Dr. Beth Vaughan-Wrobel Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a master’s level nursing student attending the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Nursing Outreach Program. This recipient must demonstrate academic excellence and indicate financial need. Award: $1,000/yr.

Dr. Patricia Heacock Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a master or a doctoral nursing student demonstrating academic excellence and financial need. Award: $1,000/yr.

Dr. Shelia Collier Horner Scholarship is awarded to a master’s student in gerontology. Award: $1,000/yr.

Mary Emma Smith Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a master’s nursing student demonstrating academic excellence and financial need. Award: $1,000/yr.

Virginia Ivey Penick Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a master’s nursing student demonstrating financial need. Priority will be given to students from the following Arkansas counties: Bradley, Calhoun, Cleveland, and Drew. Award: $1,000/yr.


Scholarships for Doctoral Students*

Dr. Carolyn Cason Scholarship is awarded to a doctoral student. It is a tribute to Dr. Cason, a former faculty member. Award: $1,000/yr.

Dr. Cornelia Beck Gerontology Research Award is given to a doctoral student engaged in Gerontological research. Award: $1,000/yr. 

Dr. Elois Field Nursing Scholarship This scholarship supports a student in the PhD Nursing Program. It is a tribute to the past Dean, Dr. Elois Field. Award: $1,000/yr.

Dr. Patricia Heacock Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a master or a doctoral nursing student demonstrating academic excellence and financial need. Award: $1,000/yr.

William Randolph Hearst Minority Endowed Scholarship is restricted to domestic minority students enrolled in the PhD program or PhD students who reside in a rural, underserved area and plans to provide service in their community. Award: $1,500/yr.
